What Does a Doula Do?

HEAD

We will talk about the birth you envision and the options you have. I can make these easier to understand, explain what are available to you at your birth location, and fortify your confidence in anything you choose.

HANDS

Of course I will provide counter pressure and suggest all the moves and position changes to keep labor progressing…

But I’m also a stable arm to help you roll over, someone to go fetch a nurse so your partner can stay by your side when a button doesn’t do the trick, your straw steadier, playlist switcher, hair braider, & honey stick opener. I’ve got you.

HEART

I am here to support the birth you want. That can mean anything from reminding you that your body is capable as many times as you need to hear it, telling each new nurse your wishes at a shift change so you can focus on what matters, or giving you permission to change your mind on something mid-labor.

A doula’s support doesn’t come with judgement, expectations, or time limits.

What Does a Doula not Do?

  • I do not make decisions for you. This is your birth!

  • I do not provide medical advice or perform any clinical tasks. My role is limited to providing for your physical, emotional, and educational support.

  • I do not catch babies. Your birth must be attended by a licensed medical provider.

 FAQs

  • A midwife is a medical professional who is licensed to deliver your baby and would take the place of your Obstetrician for a low-risk birth. A Doula is hired directly by you and they do not perform any medical tasks. Instead, a Doula focuses on your emotional health and physical comfort. While midwives, nurses, and OBs have shift changes and may swap throughout a long labor, your Doula is a constant.

  • Have the epidural! A Doula provides unbiased support, and that includes epidurals, inductions, and planned cesareans.

  • I am currently only taking one client per month, and that means you have my full focus.

Additionally, I always have a backup in place in case of an unexpected emergency.

  • Every Doula I know hires a Doula for their own births. This is because when you’re in labor, everything you thought you knew goes out the window. Educational support is only a portion of what we do. We help with labor planning, pain management, positional changes, emotional comfort, keeping your partner/support team on the same page, and so much more.
